At residential colleges, on-campus housing helps shape students' relationships to one another as well as to the institution. Currently, all Barnard College first-years besides commuters are required to live in dormitories their first year. The college now promises guaranteed housing all four years. Although for many years a minority of students lived in dorms, the question of on-campus housing presents central themes of the history of Barnard College.
